With a deadline of three months, development of Honourable Warrior was a very fast paced and involved process requiring me to take on additional roles such as Level Designer, Game Designer (associate), Systems Designer (associate), UI Designer, and UX Designer. Many of the active tasks were completed by myself along with critically significant help from an Instructional Systems Designer that I worked very close with. Scheduled and impromptu milestone reports were given when called upon.

Notable Accomplishments:

  • Began working on the project after a short orientation and work assessment process (< 5 days).

  • Constructed a new project with reversed engineered features from a highly deprecated product.

  • Actively learned and integrated XML into the project within a few days.

  • Helped to deliver a finished product for NATO's Allied Command Transformation.

What I learned:

  • Feedback is not always given when it's needed, and sometimes requires more initiative than it does as a student.

  • The development process in a non-educational setting can be very different depending on team, studio, and respective tradition.

  • A strong pre-production phase complete with systemic documentation is not always present. Sometimes requirements are more vague.

  • Experimental and/or unconventional controls should be tested early and often by others. If the controls are not necessary or required, make sure to have a more traditional set of controls ready as a backup or player option.

  • While it's not ideal, highly deprecated projects (in some circumstances) and projects without source code may require a new project to be created with reversed engineered features from the former. It is important to do a complete diagnostic of the project in question along with assessment of requirements and needs of the client(s). Ask for clarification or desired course of action from project manager.

  • Taking additional time to create design documentation for large or abstract features can save time and allow for more polish time later.

  • If you require a different working location to be optimally productive (for on-site employment), try to express that with your superior.
